ham radio might be an interesting place for paging of any kind to
gravitate to. at least, keep it alive for a while longer. paging
used to be fun and interesting to keep an eye upon,
a number of years ago. I had three of those Texas 4 level
slicers and several dedicated ( older unused models )
computers to track the many different paging services
in my area. much ( maybe all ) of the software referenced
by the link below allows a person to monitor specific cap code
lists ( individual pagers ) and it was possible to keep track
of individual users for curious wives, credit card companies
etc.
unfortunately , for the paging companies , the recent / current
generation of cellfones allows both paging and text messaging,
included in their standard phone service. I sold all my
slicers and pro-2005s on ebay , several years ago, when paging
traffic fell off and the industry began to diminish quite a bit.
used to be that all local police and detectives carried pagers
and got interesting pages , but not anymore. they all have those
walkie talkie cellfones and their use of pagers has stopped.
several local government agencies had pagers too .
the fbi was one interesting one to watch. they , alas , no longer
carry pagers " and " cellfones ..... just cellfones now ( which
also have paging, web , and text messaging a abilities ) and that
most interesting traffic has disappeared from the paging
services now , as well. there is still a sizable traffic count on
the " national " paging local outlets, but they are mostly service
call pages , machine generated , to alert techs of field equipment
that has malfunctioned . I suspect that , over time, these will go
away too , moving to phone service circuits. with phone circuits
the reporting equipment can connect directly up or even go on the
web and the tech can use newer cellfones to access the
equipment's web location and get direct repair / service info .
most companies don't want or need to have pagers and cellfones ,
especially when the pager is redundant . companies " love " the fact
that their people can be tracked by the new gps information
available in all current portable phones too. they have software
that can track their whereabouts any time the phone is powered
up ( even if the person doesn't talk ) . you never got those services
from most pagers. the heyday of pagers has passed , nowadays ,
gone the way of analog cellfones and many other technologies
that technical progress has made obsolete. a fun " old friend "
( like analog cell service , DTV / vcII hacking and phreaking ) that
is passing into oblivion as well. times sure have changed , sad
...........
